Power Correction Devices

Why Power Correction is required?

All modern electronic devices are vulnerable to the poor power quality. What can you do about it? There are power Correction Devices are available that accept electrical power in whatever form it is available and modify the power to improve the quality or reliability required for electronic AC equipment.

The power handling and performance requirements vary depending upon each application. A wide range of power correction products are available that utilizes a range of technologies and provide different degrees of protection to the connected load.

1- Isolation Transformers reduces the problem of common mode noise induced through multi current path in ground circuit or Loop.

2- Noise Filter reduce conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio-frequency interference (RFI).

Filter requires careful application if not used properly it may cause ringing effect

3- Harmonic current Control there are many methods available to control harmonic current.

  • Passive Harmonic current filters are used to prevent the harmonic currents of non linear load from being fed back into the power source where they cause heating of conductors and transformers and corresponding voltage distortion. Passive filters contain only inductor, capacitor and resistor.
  • Transformers are used to reduce harmonic current like Isolation transformer, phase shifting Transformers, multi-winding transformer, Auto transformer.
  • Active harmonic current filters are electronic devices that sense on a real-time basis the harmonic load currents and inject equal and opposite harmonic currents to cancel harmonic load currents. surge protective devices from large devices, such as lightning-surge arrestors, to small transient voltage surge suppressors used to protect plug-connected devices. Suppressors absorbs or divert energy from surges that exceed their nominal voltage.

5- Voltage Regulators most of the low frequency voltage disturbance can be controlled by using proper selection of regulation method.
Tap changer, buck- boost constant voltage transformers are used to regulate voltage.

6- Static Transfer switch (STS) use semiconductor switches to provide very fast, break-before-make switching between two independent power sources and are applied to improve the quality and reliability of power to the connected loads.

7-Uninterrupted power supply (UPS) are intended to provide regulated, uninterrupted output power regardless of the condition of the input power source, including total power outages. UPSs come in a variety of configurations and utilize various technologies.

8-Standby power supplies are back up power supply in which the load is normally supplied by the input power source. Standby power supply only when input power source is absent or not acceptable.

9- Power line conditioner combine one or more of the basic power correction technologies to provide more protection from power disturbance, some power line conditioners combine the noise-reduction features of isolation transformers or filtering devices with voltage regulators.
